Artist’s Statement
My work is composed during multiple periods of personal introspection inspired by: music composition ideas prominent in jazz music, the Surrealists’ embrace of chance and automatism, and the imagery of advertising.
Subject matter is collected from the popular culture landscape that surrounds us: catalogs, junk mail, magazines, television, etc. Additional reference materials include reproductions from art history, personal photographs, or other found objects, all of which are improvised onto a picture plane according to the needs of the painting.
Sometimes specific images are chosen because they fit the ideological theme of a piece. In other cases they have formal qualities which effectively resolve the visual layout of a composition.
After several periods of layering and/or excavating away unnecessary elements, a unity of visual layout and intellectual depth is achieved.
